For most San Franciscans, a Tenancy-in-Common (TIC) represents the only affordable way to purchase a home. At a time when housing prices are at an all time high, TICs have provided families and individuals an affordable opportunity to purchase their first home and remain in San Francisco. However, TIC ownership comes with risks. Today, converting a TIC into a condominium can take up to a decade or more. As a result, TIC owners are concerned that their hard-earned equity is tied to the destinies of their TIC partners.
The changing political climate in San Francisco has also posed a significant threat. Over the past several years, anti-homeownership legislation from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has tried to make it more difficult for individuals to own and convert their properties while discouraging others from purchasing their first home.
Homeownership is important to the future of San Francisco. Homeowners are active participants in the community, raise families, and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. San Franciscans should do more to keep these individuals in San Francisco -- not drive them out of the city.
Formed in September, 2004, the San Francisco TIC Coalition is a grass roots organization comprised of TIC owners and families. The Coalition's goals are to:
- Protect the rights of TIC owners and families
- Improve the condo lottery process
- Streamline the condo conversion process
- Promote first-time homeownership opportunities
- Provide financing alternatives for TIC owners
Please take a few moments to join the Coalition. Our strong membership base has been extremely effective whenever pressure needs to be applied on City Hall. However, we have many more battles to fight. That's why we need your help to grow the SF TIC Coalition and increase our "strength in numbers."
